    • Introducing Laurillard’s six learning types

      Competence: In this section, we will gain an appreciation for the different ways we learn.

      The outcomes for the section: 

      1. To recall the six ways we learn, according to Laurillard.
      2. To apply at least one of these in a learning intervention.

      Activities in this section:

      1. A reflective survey where we ask: What activities did teachers/ lectures/ instructors do, to get us to learn something? What can we remember of that topic? 
      2. We will watch a video and explore some resources on our own about the Conversational Framework that supports the six ways in which we learn. 
      3. In a forum activity, we will share some of the links to pages and videos and share some ideas we picked up on the ways that people learn.
      Assignment for this section:

      The assignment for this section will be a rated forum activity. We have to pick one of Laurillard’s six types of learning to help an imaginary group of vocational learners (16 years and older) "identify and manage workplace hazards". We have to explain why we picked the type and give a brief description of not more than 200 words of how we will implement the type.

    • SUMMARY

      According to Laurilard's Conversational Framework, learning and teaching of a concept is a conversation between learner, teacher, and peers. The concept that the learner needs to learn is developed as six things happen. The practical application by the learner of the concept elicits feedback from the teacher that improves the learner's grasp of the concept:

      1. Acquisition - Reading, watching, listening about the concept;
      2. Inquiry - the learner investigates the concept;
      3. Produce - the learner creates something related to the concept and gets feedback from the teacher.
      4. Discuss - the learner discusses the concept with other learners. The discussion is guided by the teacher that gives feedback.
      5. Practice - the learner does something to gain a grasp of the concept and gets feedback from the teacher;
      6. Collaboration - the learner works with other learners to arrive at solutions regarding the concept and gets feedback from the teacher.
      A rich mix of all of the above is required to have a rewarding learning experience.
